Trent and Travis Paulson were at a level of their own Nov. 19, headlining the efforts of the ISU wrestling team at the Kaufman-Brand Open by bringing home two titles.

Trent (157 pounds) beat Iowa’s Joe Johnston in the finals, 4-0, for a win over the 2005 NCAA runner-up. Travis (165) completed his afternoon with a 5-2 decision over Nick Baima of UNI.

The Paulsons, each 12-0 on the season, won titles in the Omaha Open 2003 as freshmen, the last time the Cyclones participated in the tournament. With 42 teams and more than 600 wrestlers, the Kaufman-Brand Open, in Omaha, Neb. is the this year’s biggest single-day collegiate tournament.

Freshman Nick Gallick (133) showed his potential with a fourth-place finish, while David Bertolino and Grant Turner finished fifth and sixth, respectively, in the 174-pound bracket.

“It was an intense tournament,” said coach Bobby Douglas. “Our guys fought hard all day against high-caliber competition.”

Trent beat defending Div. II national champion Patrick Allibone, 12-5, in the semifinals, and Oklahoma State’s Newly McSpadden, 8-5, earlier in the afternoon.

Travis took out two Iowa wrestlers on the afternoon. He beat Joe Uker early in the day by tech fall, then earned a closer 5-1 over Cole Pape in the semifinals.

All-Americans Nate Gallick (141) and Kurt Backes (184) sat out the team’s last meet before the Iowa duel.

The next meet for the Cyclones will be a Dec. 2 showdown with the Hawkeyes in Ames.
