Cyclones prepare to face Nebraska

Iowa State’s 28-21 win over Army may have come with a heavy price.

With sophomore reserve running back Jason Scales already out with an injury, the Cyclones also may be without starter Stevie Hicks when they face Nebraska on Saturday.

Hicks left the game against Army with an undisclosed injury. The junior had 22 yards on nine carries, just one of those in the second half.

ISU coach Dan McCarney said Hicks is listed as day-to-day during his weekly Big 12 coaches teleconference.

“We hope Stevie will be ready to play,” McCarney said. “He has played in our first three games, but hasn’t been 100 percent and we’re hoping he will be by Saturday.

“Hopefully Stevie will be ready to play. He’s a tremendous runner and has had a great career so far here at Iowa State.”

With Hicks out of the game, Greg Coleman stepped in, recording 30 yards on six carries. He also caught three passes for 15 yards, including a second quarter touchdown reception from quarterback Bret Meyer.

“He doesn’t have lightning speed, but he’s a good, solid football player,” McCarney said.

The Cyclones are also waiting to make a decision on Scales. There has been talk of a possible redshirt for the true sophomore as he continues to recover from offseason surgery.

“He’s day-to-day now,” McCarney said. “We have not made a decision and we’ll see how it goes this week. It’s still all in rehab and recovery. He’s still running and sprinting, but is he ready to start practicing football? We don’t know yet.”

Although the Cyclones allowed Army to stay in the game throughout, McCarney said he thinks it says less about Iowa State’s shortcomings and more about the quality of Army’s program.

“You can come up with excuses all day for a team that didn’t play as good as they should have and a coaching staff that didn’t coach as well as we should have,” McCarney said. “The bottom line is, we got out of there with a win and we were really glad to do that. When you talk about the things we didn’t do, to me, it takes away from the great effort and the game plan and intensity and relentlessness of the Army team.”

Once the game was over, McCarney said his team took the opportunity to pay their respects to the men and women who are serving in the military.

“In that environment, it brings out a lot of patriotism,” McCarney said.

“When the game was over, we were thankful and appreciative to win the game, but then the least we could do was to go over and show respect to the cadets for the things that they might be doing, and probably will be doing, in the months and years ahead.”

Paris honored

For the second time this season, an ISU defender was named the Big 12 defensive player of the week.

Safety Steve Paris took home the honor after intercepting two passes and recording six tackles against Army. He has three interceptions on the season, leading the Big 12 and placing him second in the nation.

“He had a tremendous game in a very hard-fought victory at West Point,” McCarney said. “He’s off to a real fine start to his senior year.”

Paris joins LaMarcus Hicks as Cyclones who have won the award this season. Hicks received recognition after Iowa State’s 23-3 win over then-No. 8 Iowa. Punter Troy Blankenship was named Big 12 special teams player of the week for that same game.

Baylor game-time set

Iowa State’s Oct. 8 game against Baylor will kickoff at 1 p.m. at Jack Trice Stadium. The game will not be televised. Both teams are 3-0, with Baylor opening its Big 12 schedule this weekend at Texas A&M.
