ISU soccer team gets first victory

The ISU women’s soccer team got its first win of the season Friday night at home in a 1-0 shutout of Purdue. But the team was on the receiving end of the same score Sunday against Indiana.

Iowa State’s Stephanie Kaphingst’s goal with just over 13 minutes to play in Friday’s game was the first goal for the Cyclones this year.

“I got my foot on it and tried to hit the post, and the girl just helped me out,” she said.

Kaphingst took an assist from Meghan Smith and ricocheted it off the leg of a Boilermaker defender for the goal, reducing a building offensive frustration for Iowa State (1-2-1).

“Sometimes it takes 15 to 20 attempts to get the goal we need to win the game,” said ISU coach Rebecca Hornbacher.

“That’s what happened on Friday night. We had [19] shots and got the one we needed.”

The game was full of missed opportunities for both teams, as Iowa State outshot Purdue (1-3) 19-16 but converted only one goal.

Sunday’s game against Indiana was the opposite of Friday’s, with the exception of the score. It was the Hoosier’s first win of the season, making their record 1-2-1.

The Cyclones took only four shots-on-goal Sunday — a far cry from the 19 they took Friday — to the Hoosiers’ 13. Iowa State did, however, come painfully close to lighting up the scoreboard with the few opportunities they had.

Down 1-0 in the second half, Smith got off a shot while battling with an Indiana defender just across the midfield line. The ball was partially blocked and rolled past Hoosier goalkeeper Lauren Fabbro, who stepped out of the box to defend.

As it slowed on its approach to the net, Fabbro caught up with the ball and kicked it away before it crossed the plane of the goal.

“I think the energy after not putting it away just wasn’t there,” Hornbacher said. “There was a drop-off in energy level from Friday, which we can’t have.”

Indiana’s Molly Beckwith scored with 8:58 left in the first half, poking the ball past goalkeeper Joanna Haig after she stepped out to defend. It was the Hoosiers’ first goal of the season.

Despite Iowa State’s slow start, Haig, who had nine saves on the weekend, said she sees light on the horizon.

“[Struggling to score] gets a little frustrating, but as a team we have to be bigger than that,” she said. “We have to get over that hump. But it is better to not have the breaks go our way now than during the conference season.

“One of these games we are going to get a couple goals, and then the floodgates will open.”

Still, the weekend wasn’t a wash.

“Purdue was a very good team,” Hornbacher said. “Overall, our defense was just amazing.”
