Ladies’ soccer avoids loss, prepares for Red Raiders

The ISU women’s soccer team avoided a loss, but couldn’t get another win Sunday, tying Drake in double-overtime, 1-1.

In their last game of the non-conference season and the Bulldog Bash, the Cyclones (5-2-2 overall) had their four-game winning streak snapped.

But even in the deadlock, they never let the Bulldogs (2-5-1) get the upper hand.

Iowa State was outshot 15-6, with only one of those chances coming in the two extra periods. The Cyclones got on the board 14 minutes into the second half off an own-goal by the Bulldogs, but less than a minute later, the home team answered with a score to knot it up for good.

Drake’s Kristin Underwood managed to score past ISU goalie Joanna Haig, who had a season-high eight saves – five of those in overtime. Amy Flores took half of the team’s six shots.

Flores and Renee de St. Aubin each scored in Iowa State’s 2-1 comeback win over Creighton to open the tournament.

Although being held without a shot on Sunday, St. Aubin, the team’s leading scorer, was named to the all-tournament team with Cyclones Deb Benakis and Kate Kirwan.

Texas Tech will be the first conference opponent for the Cyclones. The Red Raiders have struggled this season and lost six of their first seven games, but have home field advantage on their side Friday night for the opener.
