Prints Copy Center has plans to relocate

Prints Copy Center, 2515 Chamberlain St., is moving to a new home Oct. 1.

Owner Kam Collins said he is moving all his printers to 416 Lincoln Way, next to Godfather’s Pizza, 414 Lincoln Way, because of the location.

“I used to have a store in Altoona, which I moved to Hubbell, and that taught me all about location, and I don’t have it at the Ames store,” he said. “I can do better on Lincoln Way — there’s better exposure.”

Collins said because the business has been there for a long time — it started in 1987, and he started working there in 1989 and bought it in 1995 — it was a big decision to make.

“I couldn’t make up my mind; I was dragging my feet,” he said. “Then this guy came in and said he didn’t know we were here, which I have heard a million times, and I made up my mind right then.”

Matt Randall, vice president of Randall Corporation, 420 South 17th St., said he does not have any information yet on who is going to lease the building on 2515 Chamberlain St.

Since Collins bought Prints Copy Center, he has expanded to locations in Ankeny and Hubbell. Collins looked at several locations on Lincoln Way before deciding on 416 Lincoln Way.

“I was going to rent next to Burger King, there were two spots available there, because there was better exposure and better parking, but I didn’t hear back from them for like ever,” he said.

Collins said the decision to move did not have anything to do with Copyworks, 2502 Lincoln Way, being right down the street, even though it is competition.

“Copyworks is a formidable advisory — they’re a big corporation,” he said. “But if they were a mom and pop store, they would be out of business by now.”

Collins said Campustown has been changing — and not in a good way.

“Campustown has been going down the crackpot,” he said. “The huge buildings are a blight, and you don’t see the walk-by traffic you used to see with McDonald’s gone and the Towers closed.”
