Student’s name may grace Hall

The family of Robert Jason Gore, an ISU student killed in Iraq, is taking steps to get his name listed in the Gold Star Hall of the Memorial Union.

Sue Selby-Gore, Gore’s mother, said even though she had not thought about Gore being listed in Gold Star Hall, she is very interested in having his name engraved on the wall.

“I didn’t even think about it. I’ve had classes in the MU and observed the walls, and it didn’t even dawn on me,” Sue said. “I would love to have his name on the wall.”

Kathy Svec, program coordinator for the Memorial Union, said she talked with Selby-Gore on Friday and sent her information on the criteria for eligibility.

“She will now have to provide documentation that illustrates eligibility on each of the four criteria,” Svec said.

Selby-Gore said she is going to put together a proposal to present to Svec and a committee, which will decide if Gore is eligible.

“He loved ISU and wanted to come back and finish his classes,” Selby-Gore said. “He couldn’t wait to get back to school, but he wanted to make sure he had enough money to finish and put his little brother through college. He would be very honored to have his name on the wall.”

Selby-Gore said her co-workers at the Ames Police Department are planning to buy a brick at the proposed new memorial to also honor Gore.

The new Ames Veterans Memorial is planned to be located at the north east corner of 5th Street and Grand Avenue.

“We are still finalizing details, but there will be a curved wall with sculptures affixed to it and a quote from George Washington,” said Herman Quirmbach, co-chairman of the veterans memorial committee.

Brick walkways will be engraved with names of veterans and other people who have been involved in the military, Quirmbach said.

“It’s mostly about honoring veterans, not just people who served during war time, but anyone who served in war time or peace time. We’re trying to allow people the opportunity to recognize folks who have contributed in a lot of different ways,” he said.
