Don’t rule out seeing Jason Berryman back in cardinal and gold next season, as the former ISU defensive lineman might be back on the team, his father Jewel said.

The Des Moines Register reported Berryman may be back with the Cyclones in 2005, based on an interview with his father.

“Jason is a die-hard Iowa State player and he is going to stay with them, regardless of what rumors people are hearing,” Jewel Berryman told the Register. “We made a commitment and we intend to stick with it.”

Berryman was released from jail Monday, after spending 258 days behind bars. He pleaded guilty to serious misdemeanor assault and first-degree theft, stemming from an incident on Aug. 4.

Jewel said he has received signals from the team that say his son will be welcomed back.

“Coach [Dan] McCarney isn’t going to openly come out and say anything just yet, but we have heard that if Jason wanted to come back, he would be welcomed back like any other student,” Jewel said in the article.

Iowa State has no policy that prohibits an athlete convicted of a felony from returning to the university.

Additional attempts to contact the Berryman family were unsuccessful.

Berryman will return home to Houston this summer, the Register reported, where he will take classes before returning to Iowa State for the second session of summer school.

McCarney said he will meet with Jason, along with all other members of the football team.

“Coach Mac will meet with Jason this week, but no decision of any kind will be forthcoming in the near future,” athletic department spokesman Tom Kroeschell said in an interview Monday.
