5 seniors to say farewell

Big wins have defined every season for Anne O’Neil, Mary Fox, Katie Robinette, Lisa Kriener and Tracy Paustian — the five ISU seniors who will have their curtain call at Hilton Coliseum on Tuesday against the Kansas Jayhawks.

“We’ve had a huge win at [Hilton Coliseum] every single year we’ve been here,” O’Neil said.

Those victories include wins over two nationally ranked No. 3 squads — Oklahoma in 2002 and Kansas State in 2003 — a No. 2 Texas Tech team, a double-overtime thriller against instate rival Iowa last season and most recently, upending the No. 13 Texas Longhorns in January.

“I think running out of that tunnel for the last time will be pretty moving,” O’Neil said. “We’re sad we have to play our last game at Hilton, but we know there’s still a lot ahead that we’ve worked hard for at the end of the season.”

One goal the No. 20 Cyclones have is to keep their unblemished record at home in tact. Iowa State enters the contest against Kansas a perfect 14-0 at home, and can become only the third team in ISU women’s basketball history to finish the season unbeaten at home. The last time the feat was accomplished was during the 2000-01 season, by a team who went on to win the Big 12 tournament.

“I think it’s a great sense of pride when you can go through a basketball season and win all your home games,” said ISU coach Bill Fennelly.

If perfection is obtained, Fennelly said it will leave a lasting impression on the seniors.

“For them to say ‘We never lost a game our senior year at Hilton Coliseum,’ that’s one of those stories they’ll share with people forever,” he said.

Losers of two straight, Kansas is looking for its 13th win of the season. The Jayhawks (12-14, 5-10 Big 12) are coming off a 73-46 defeat against No. 17 Kansas State.

Kriener said the bottom line for Iowa State is leaving everything out on the floor.

“Whatever the scouting report is [we just] need to follow it,” she said.

The trio of O’Neil, Robinette and Fox all average double-digit point production for the Cyclones and are also one-two-three in steals. Robinette leads the team in rebounding, with O’Neil in second. Off the bench, Kriener and Paustian add 5.7 and 2 points per game, respectively.

Hilton Coliseum is among the nation’s leaders in attendance, and Kriener said that dedication is admirable.

“The support of all of our fans, the community and the people that drive all those hours to come and watch us is very special,” she said.

O’Neil said it will be an emotional game for the seniors, but it is be key to stay loose and take time to enjoy the atmosphere one final time.

“If [we] start thinking about too [many] emotional things it will ruin that time,” O’Neil said. “You just want to live in the moment and soak it all in.”
