Iowa State honored one of its greatest teams during halftime on Saturday, recognizing the team — and its coach — that moved Cyclone basketball into national prominence.

The 1984-85 ISU basketball team set a then-school record with 21 wins and became the first Cyclone team to participate in the NCAA Tournament in 41 years.

Iowa State was led by three future NBA players, Barry Stevens, Jeff Grayer and Jeff Hornacek. Stevens led the Cyclones, averaging 21.7 points per game, and left as the school’s all-time leading scorer.

The team excited Iowa State fans, building the foundation for one of the greatest homecourt advantages in the nation.

“We’ve always known how the fans, the people here and in this community feel about us,” Grayer said. “There’s always been a wonderful, warm welcome and we truly, truly love them all for it.”

The university also honored Johnny Orr, the Cyclone coaching legend and leader of the team, by hanging his likeness from the Hilton Coliseum rafters.

“It was long overdue,” Hornacek said. “The day he left here it should have been up there. He made this basketball program.”

In 14 seasons with Iowa State, Orr compiled 218 wins, the most by any Cyclone coach. He led the team to the NCAA Tournament six times during his tenure.

Although the members of the current Cyclone team are too young to remember the ’84-85 squad, they are the benefactors of the legacy Orr and company started.

“To understand those are the guys … who started Hilton Magic,” said ISU head coach Wayne Morgan. “You can only honor Coach Orr and Barry Stevens and Grayer, all those guys for everything they did.”
