Teams close in soccer standings face key matches

After claiming its first road victory last weekend over Missouri, the ISU women’s soccer team looks to extend its three-game winning streak, traveling to the Sooner state to face Oklahoma on Friday and Oklahoma State on Sunday.

Iowa State (6-7, 3-2) is determined to stick to the plan it has set for the season, focusing entirely on its Friday game against Oklahoma (6-4-3, 1-1-2).

“We still need to take it one game at a time,” said junior forward Amy Flores. “We came out last weekend and finally won on the road, and now we have confidence on the road.”

The Sooners have won two out of their last three games and have major talent up front with Savannah Scott, who has six goals on the season. Allyson Kucera and Becky Nelson each have three goals for Oklahoma.

The Cyclones hope to answer with Flores, who has four goals in the last three games. The Cyclones are led defensively by Big 12 defensive player of the week, freshman Joanna Haig, who has not allowed a goal in the last two and a half games.

Haig said the key to the team’s defensive success has been communication on the field.

“It’s really just about talking and organization,” Haig said. “Last weekend we did a really good job of that.”

Oklahoma State (10-2-2, 2-2-1) holds one of the best overall records, but is one spot behind the Cyclones in the Big 12 standings after Iowa State’s win over Missouri.

“Oklahoma and Oklahoma State are very strong teams,” said head coach Rebecca Hornbacher. “They both are striving for the points, just like we are.”

Despite Iowa State’s improved play in recent weeks, the coaching staff knows how important it is to not allow the team to let up. They are fifth in the Big 12, but both Oklahoma teams are knocking on the door right behind them. The Cyclones’ schedule does not get any easier next weekend; the Cyclones will battle fourth-place Texas and first-place Texas A&M.

“I’m very pleased with where we’re at right now, but we have a big stretch in front of us,” Hornbacher said. “Every game is critical for where we want to be.”

Using the confidence gained in the victory over Missouri, along with the fundamentals they have been practicing all season, the Cyclones said they’re ready for a difficult test ahead of them.

“It was good to beat one of the top teams in the conference,” Haig said. “We need to take a good week of practice into Friday. We’ll be really excited to get to Oklahoma.”
