Cyclones seek to continue conference winning streak

The ISU women’s soccer team hits the road Sunday against Missouri, trying to extend its two-game conference winning streak.

The Cyclones defeated Baylor and Texas Tech last weekend to return to .500 in conference play.

Iowa State (5-7, 2-2) is on the road for the first time in almost a month. Missouri (5-6-1, 2-2) is one spot ahead of the Cyclones in the conference standings.

The Cyclones already have as many wins this season as they had in the 2003 season. Missouri has won three of its last five, including a 1-0 win against ranked Colorado.

The Cyclones also remember that Missouri eliminated Iowa State’s hopes for an appearance in the Big 12 tournament last season.

“Missouri has some great goal scorers; they have a solid team,” said head coach Rebecca Hornbacher. “We’ll be prepared to fight for the points.”

Missouri’s Jennifer Nobis leads the Tigers with five goals on the season, but no other Tiger has tallied more than one goal. The Tigers have been dominating on offense, outshooting opponents 211-135 on the year.

Missouri will try to hand Iowa State its fifth straight road loss.

“Our last road trip didn’t prove so successful for us,” said freshman goalkeeper Joanna Haig. “We lost a bunch of really close ones, and that was really disappointing.”

The Cyclones need to post high numbers on offense, something they’ve done well in their previous four contests.

“We need to keep focusing on playing strong up top,” said freshman goalkeeper Laura Boyer. “We need to keep looking for shots; we have increased our shots per game pretty much every game.”

Junior Amy Flores has been hot for the Cyclones, scoring the game winner in double overtime Friday night and adding two goals Sunday. Junior Kristina Baumann added her first goal of the season and currently leads the team in shots with 22.

“Amy Flores is on top of her game right now,” Hornbacher said.

“She’s doing a good job of being dominant in the air and trying to find ways to get it done in the final third.”

The Cyclones are also led by freshman Erin Witte, who was named the Big 12 newcomer of the week on Oct. 4. Witte scored the game-tying goal late in the second half against Baylor and leads the team in points with eight.

Iowa State has played solid on the defensive side of the ball as well. Haig has 43 saves this season, which is fifth best in the conference. The Cyclones have allowed 15 goals this season.

“We’re playing very good soccer right now,” Hornbacher said. “Things are just really clicking right now.”
