Women’s soccer falls to elite Texas squads

The ISU women’s soccer team has shown that it can compete with some of the best teams in the nation.

It just hasn’t won yet. The Cyclones dropped their first overtime game of the season Friday at Texas and lost at home to Texas A&M on Sunday, both by scores of 1-0.

Texas A&M’s (13-5, 8-2) Madison Klovstad scored the only goal Sunday, 22 minutes into the first half.

Iowa State (7-10, 4-5) stunned Texas A&M with a very physical style of play, drawing frustration from the Aggies.

“They definitely were not ready for our physical fight today,” said freshman Erin Witte. “When we did come out, they got frustrated, and they made mistakes.”

Iowa State hit the crossbar with about 30 minutes left in the second half, but that was as close as it would come to scoring.

The wind blustered toward the north end of the field, giving the Aggies trouble in the first half with their clears. In the second half, Iowa State played well with the wind coming at them. They kept their passes on the ground and their shots low.

“We prepared pretty well for the wind; we knew we had to play balls on the ground,” said freshman defender Beth Passman. “I think we played against the wind better than [Texas A&M] did.”

Freshman goalie Joanna Haig played strong in net for Iowa State, making six saves while allowing only one goal. Kati Jo Spisak was just as good in net for the Aggies, making five saves en route to her shutout.

“We can’t give up easy chances like we did,” Passman said. “We made one mistake on defense, and they converted it.”

Both teams logged 11 shots in the contest.

“Texas A&M is a fantastic team, I have great respect for our opponent,” said coach Rebecca Hornbacher. “I respect them, but I think our team played outstanding today.”

The Cyclones hope to bounce back quickly, as they need a win against No. 6 Kansas to keep their Big 12 tournament hopes alive.

“I think it’s disappointing when you can compete with the elite teams and you don’t get the results,” Hornbacher said.

“I think our team picks up the pieces — we win and lose as a team.”

Iowa State concludes their regular season next weekend, with its final home match against rival Iowa on Sunday.
