Cyclones are shut out by Carolina teams

The ISU women’s soccer team wasn’t able to dodge two losses during the weekend, dropping Friday’s game to North Carolina State 2-0 and Sunday’s game against South Carolina 1-0.

In Friday night’s game, Iowa State (1-3) failed to tally a single shot on goal in the first half and finished with just five for the game. N.C. State shot the ball 14 times and put 11 on net. Freshman goalie Jo Haig made nine saves for the Cyclones while the Wolfpack’s Megan Connors only needed to make one save en route to the shutout.

Junior forward Amy Flores tallied the most shots for the Cyclones with two. Midfielder Jess Villhauer notched the only shot on net for the Cyclones.

N.C. State’s first goal came at 20:45 of the first half when Carol Tognetti hit the ball in the box, firing it past Haig.

“We went down early in the first half with a loose ball in the box,” head coach Rebecca Hornbacher said in a press release. “We did a poor job of cleaning the ball out.”

Iowa State’s attempt to answer back was broken up when Connors intercepted a cross pass from the far side of the field.

The Cyclones played a more solid offensive game in the second half, pressuring North Carolina State’s defense early, recording two straight shots. Iowa State’s efforts went unrewarded though, as N.C. State tallied its second goal at 47:53 of the second half.

“Our intensity picked up in the second half,” Hornbacher said. “We need to have that throughout the game.”

N.C. State played a very physical game, tallying 20 fouls to Iowa State’s eight.

Iowa State started strong in Sunday against South Carolina, outshooting the Gamecocks 4-3 in the first half. Unfortunately for the Cyclones, South Carolina came out firing in the second half and outshot Iowa State 8-2, finishing with a total of 11 shots to the Cyclone’s six.

South Carolina’s Ashley Williams broke the scoreless tie 15 minutes into the second half, scoring on a breakaway from the right corner.

Haig made one save on two shots on goal in her fourth straight start of the season while South Carolina’s Lindsay Thorstenson saved all three shots that the Cyclones put on net.

Iowa State was led on offense by freshman Stephanie Kaphingst, who recorded two shots. Freshmen Brittanie Waddell, Renee de St. Aubin and Flores each put a shot on net. South Carolina’s Thorstenson saved every shot she faced.

Iowa State tallied nine fouls to South Carolina’s 16.

If Iowa State plans to rebound from its winless road-trip, it will have to do it while playing away from home for the second straight week. The Cyclones play at Pepperdine at 5 p.m. Friday and face California-Santa Barbara at 3 p.m. Sunday.
