Athletic department cuts scholarships for summer classes

The ISU athletic department announced it will be reducing funds for a program that pays for scholarship athletes to attend summer classes.

In November, ISU President Gregory Geoffroy ordered the athletic department to slash $560,000 from its budget, part of an $8.3 million university-wide cut.

Phone calls to Athletics Director Bruce Van De Velde’s office were not returned for this story.

Athletic officials plan to cut $100,000 from the program that pays for student-athletes to attend summer classes in order to complete their graduation requirements on time or remain academically eligible.

Many athletes also use the program to graduate early and to maintain workout schedules during the summer.

The athletic department spent $300,000 on the program last summer, and the cuts shouldn’t affect students who wish to use the program again, said Associate Athletic Director Calli Sanders.

“We do have other revenue sources [for the program], and I anticipate that everyone who wants or needs to will still be able to use the program,” Sanders said.

An additional $130,000 is being cut from non-sport departments, such as marketing and academic services.

The athletic department is still “working through the non-athletic cuts,” Sanders said, and hasn’t decided what specifically will be cut.

A sum of $290,000 will be pulled from the athletic department’s $2.5 million reserve fund to help offset this year’s round of budget cuts.
