An ISU student is dead and another student is hospitalized after a two-car accident in Nebraska Wednesday evening.

Jayna Trotzig, freshman in pre-business, and her roommate, Allison Nylen, freshman in psychology, were returning to Ames from Sioux City after a side trip to Wayne, Neb., traveling east on Nebraska Highway 51 when their car approached the intersection of Highway 51 and U.S. Highway 77 near Lyons, Neb.

Nylen was driving the car, with Trotzig as the passenger, when the car pulled away from a stop sign, said a Burt County, Neb. dispatcher.

A tractor-trailer driven by David Camp, of Brandon, S.D., broadsided Nylen and Trotzig on the passenger side, the dispatcher said.

Trotzig died instantly, said Jayna’s father, Joe Trotzig. Nylen was taken to a Sioux City hospital for head trauma and is in stable condition, he said.

Camp was taken to a Sioux City hospital for minor injuries, and was treated and released, the dispatcher said.

Trotzig’s older sister, Alison Trotzig, senior in graphic design, is currently enrolled in a study abroad program in Rome and is flying back to be with the family, Joe Trotzig said.

Trotzig was an active member of the ISU Water-Ski Club, and had come home to Sioux City to pick up a dress for the club’s upcoming formal dance, Joe Trotzig said.

Trotzig was a popular member of the club, said Joe Weiser, president of the ISU Water-Ski Club and junior in mechanical engineering.

“She was really fun and had a lot of friends,” Weiser said.

Trotzig planned to go into pharmaceutical sales after completing her degree at Iowa State, Joe Trotzig said.

“She was one of those kids that was so charming and affable,” he said. “She was one of those people that could charm anybody.”
