ISU men will play final exhibition game

It’s one last tuneup for the Cyclones Monday as they play their final exhibition game against Global Sports — and not a moment too soon for junior center Jared Homan.

“We’ve had two weeks of practice, so I just want to step out on the court in front of some fans and play basketball,” Homan said.

However, it hasn’t been an uneventful couple of weeks for the Cyclones, with suspended senior center Jackson Vroman returning to practice.

“He brings a competitive aspect to practice that had been lacking,” Homan said.

Head Coach Wayne Morgan didn’t say when Vroman would see any game time, but he did say Vroman is still a great asset on the practice court.

“It’s very good to have him back at practice, because he’s a very good player,” Morgan said. “He really gives us a better level of competition on the practice court.”

On a more sour note, two of the Cyclones’ other big men — Reggie George and Damion Staple — have been plagued the past two weeks with ankle and knee injuries, respectively.

Morgan said their current status is day-to-day.

The Cyclones head into the game with a perfect 4-0 record against Global Sports, but Homan said it will definitely be a better test than Iowa State’s last game against the L.A. Stars.

“They’ve beaten some teams and played others really close, so I think they’ll be better than the last team we played,” Homan said.

“They’re very good, they’re pros,” said senior guard Jake Sullivan. “They’re older guys, and a lot of them have played pro ball at some level, so we’re obviously going to have to come here and work.”

Global Sports is made up of former college players from around the country, with three of its players coming from Oklahoma State.

Guard Maurice Baker was on the sixth-ranked Cowboys team that beat the Cyclones 69-66 in the 2001—02 season. Sullivan said playing former competition serves as a good motivator.

“I think it helps fuel the fire, but I think it’s just the game in general too,” Sullivan said. “We’ve been practicing for two weeks and we’re getting tired of each other, so now we can go take it out on some other people.”

Homan had a monster game against the Stars with 21 points and 15 rebounds. He said all he can do is try to play just as well this game.

“I’m just trying to do the same thing. With Reggie and Damion injured a little bit, I’m going to have to step it up and play a little bit bigger around the post,” Homan said. “It’s just another test for us to see it we can improve from our last game.”
