ISU Police arrested an Ames woman Tuesday after police said she falsely reported being assaulted by an acquaintance.

Cindy Marie Schuster-Villafane, 3905 Tripp St. #7, was charged with filing a false report to a public safety entity.

ISU Police said they received a report Sept. 9 from a woman who said she had been assaulted by an acquaintance. She told police the male acquaintance “threatened her with a sharp instrument and had inflicted several injuries,” according to an ISU Police press release.

She told police the assault occurred while she was parked in a lot at University Village. She said she attempted to fight off the individual, whom she identified to police by name, but was not able to escape.

ISU Police conducted several follow-up interviews with the woman. During those interviews, she was able to identify a photograph of the person she said had attacked her. According to the press release, interviews with the woman and others “revealed numerous inconsistencies and omissions in her account of events.”

ISU Police later discovered the individual the woman named as her attacker was not in the area at the time of the attack. He had been incarcerated in a Texas jail since Aug. 5.

Filing a false report to a public safety entity is a serious misdemeanor. If found guilty, Schuster-Villafane could face a fine ranging from $250—$1,500 and jail time not to exceed one year. Schuster-Villafane was transported to the Story County Jail where she is being held on $2,000 bond.

In 2001, former ISU student Katie Robb claimed she was abducted from a bus stop near Gilman Hall and raped by four black men. According to a March 2002 Ethos article, Robb pleaded guilty to filing a false report and received probation following her sentencing.
