Alumna taken to hospital after hitting grain bin trailer

A Huxley woman was transported to the hospital with minor injuries after her car hit the back of a tractor with an attached grain bin Thursday afternoon.

Amanda Dykstra, 2003 ISU alumna in veterinary medicine, was driving north on South Dakota Avenue when she struck the back of the tractor, also driving north, said Sgt. Barry Thomas of the Story County Sheriff’s Office.

“She literally came from straight behind [the driver of the tractor],” said Bryan Clark, graduate student in entomology and witness to the accident.

Clark said he and Nicole Tinfo, graduate student in animal science, were approximately a quarter of a mile away from the accident. They were traveling south at approximately 3:20 p.m. when they saw the accident.

“Mostly, we saw the bin dump and tip,” Clark said.

Austin Arndt, sophomore in animal science, was the driver of the tractor. He suffered no injuries.

Thomas said the Story County Sheriff’s Office will continue to investigate the accident. He said police will examine skid marks to determine how fast the vehicles were going.

“There is possible alcohol involvement, too,” Thomas said. “That will be part of the investigation.”

Witnesses said Dykstra, who was driving a red Dodge Neon, did not appear to have any serious injuries.

“She was out [of the car] before we even pulled over,” Clark said.

He said Dykstra appeared shaken up and he told her to sit down and wait for emergency vehicles.

“She just said she was in a rush to get to work,” Tinfo said.

After talking with police officials, Dykstra was taken to Mary Greeley Medical Center.
