Old-fashioned fun and festivities on the Fourth

The Farm House Museum on campus will celebrate this Fourth of July in a traditional fashion.

The Farm House is hosting a Fourth of July celebration filled with an eclectic mix of games, music and food.

Old-fashioned games dating from 1860 to 1910 are planned for the event, said Rachel Hampton, communication specialist for the university museums.

Some of these games include hoop and graces, a slippery watermelon carrying contest and an egg toss.

“We have lots of adults that like to do the sack races,” Hampton said.

The Onion Creek Cloggers will provide live music and clogging entertainment in the yard to the side of the Farm House Museum, Hampton said.

The old-fashioned music and clog dancing group has played the event several times before, said Mary Sand, a clogger and band member of the Onion Creek Cloggers.

“It’s a great place to perform,” she said. “The audience and staff is always very nice. We always have such a good time.”

The event was revived last year after taking a hiatus for a few years, Hampton said.

“We felt that, especially last year, people needed a place to have old-fashioned fun again,” she said.

Hampton said the Fourth of July is a special day for the Farm House Museum aside from being Independence day. On July 4, 1976, the Farm House Museum first opened, she said.

“We felt there was a need in Ames for a celebration during the day,” Hampton said. “We needed something to bring the campus community together.”

Last year, about 400 people showed up for the event, Hampton said.

“We hope to have the same amount this year if not more,” she said.

Tours of the Farm House Museum will also be offered, Hampton said. Guests who have not visited the Farm House Museum since last Independence Day will see for the first time the recent renovations including the showing room and the remodeled staircase, she said.

“There’s food, there’s drink and it’s all free,” Hampton said. “You can’t beat that.”

The event will take place from 1 — 4 p.m. Friday afternoon.
