Iowa State’s men’s basketball troubles continued to grow when yet another player was arrested on drunk driving and marijuana possession charges Tuesday morning.

Senior Tim Barnes, the starting point guard last season, was driving near the intersection of Franklin Avenue and Lincoln Way when he was stopped around 2:30 a.m.

Capt. Rob Bowers of the ISU Police said Barnes was charged with operating while intoxicated and possession of a controlled substance, thought to be marijuana.

Barnes was taken to the Story County Jail and released later Tuesday morning.

“We are extremely disappointed,” head coach Wayne Morgan said. “Tim is suspended indefinitely from the basketball team, remaining consistent with athletic department policy.”

The number of basketball athletes in trouble with the law recently will result in more attention from the athletic department, athletics director Bruce Van De Velde said.

“In addition to what we already provide, additional substance and alcohol abuse expertise through counseling and education will be brought to campus to work with our student-athletes,” he said.

Barnes is the latest in a long line of arrests and other problems in the last year.

Senior Jackson Vroman, a starting forward for the Cyclones, was suspended from the team after being arrested in May in Spirit Lake for possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia.

In late March, starting junior center Jared Homan pleaded guilty to charges of public intoxication.

Clint Varley, who has exhausted his eligibility, was suspended this past February after being arrested and charged with drunken driving.

In October of 2002, former Cyclone center Chris Alexander was arrested for serious assault. He later pleaded guilty to a lesser charge.

Omar Bynum, another Cyclone with no eligibility remaining, was arrested last June for operating while intoxicated and possession of marijuana.

Players haven’t been the only ones coming under fire from the law in recent months.

Former assistant coach Randy Brown resigned in early March after being charged with possession and receipt of child pornography.

Former head coach Larry Eustachy resigned in early May after pictures were released that were taken at a late night private party in Columbia, Mo. following a Cyclone loss. The pictures featured him drinking beer and kissing college students.

Just before Eustachy resigned, former assistant coach Steve Barnes was suspended because he allegedly threatened a player’s family for not supporting Eustachy.

Current head coach Wayne Morgan said he plans to deal with the situation.

“We want to be proactive in discussing the seriousness and ramifications of these matters with every individual on this team,” he said.

Last season, Barnes’ first with the Cyclones after transferring from Southeastern Illinois College, he averaged 11.3 points per game and led the Cyclones with 154 assists on a 17—14 team.
