Vroman arrested

Two weeks was too long for the ISU men’s basketball team to go without getting bad news, and getting it in bunches.

News surfaced Tuesday of the arrest of 6—10 senior-to-be forward Jackson Vroman on charges of drug possession over the weekend.

Then, Wednesday, guard Adam Haluska was granted an unconditional release from his scholarship.

Vroman was a passenger in a car that was pulled over for speeding in Spirit Lake, about 2:30 a.m. Saturday, said Spirit Lake Chief of Police Jon Martyr.

Martyr said Vroman was taken into custody and charged with possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia. Vroman allegedly was in possession of a green, leafy substance.

Vroman was held until the next morning, when he saw a Dickinson County judge and was released, Martyr said. Vroman was in custody for between six to eight hours.

The driver of the car, Nicholas Vander Sluis of Milford, was charged with drunken driving.

Besides Vander Sluis and Vroman, two other people were passengers in the car, but neither was charged in the incident.

Tuesday, ISU men’s basketball coach Wayne Morgan released a statement saying that Vroman was suspended indefinitely from the basketball team.

“Once the legal system has ruled on this situation, we will address it further. This type of behavior is unacceptable,” Morgan said.

The marijuana possession charge would subject Vroman, if convicted for a first offense, to either a prison term of six months or less or a fine of $1,000 or less, or a combination, according to Chapter 124, Section 401 of the Iowa Code.

Possession of drug paraphernalia is a simple misdemeanor.

Vroman’s arrest comes after a long list of off-court problems for members of the men’s basketball program in the last year.

Omar Bynum, a forward who has now completed his eligibility, was arrested for operating while intoxicated and possession of marijuana last June. Chris Alexander, who left the team for personal reasons in January, was charged with serious assault last October and eventually pleaded guilty to a lesser charge.

Reserve Clint Varley, who has completed his eligibility, was arrested for drunken driving on Feb. 23.

Former assistant coach Randy Brown resigned March 3 following charges of possession and receipt of child pornography.

On Mar. 29, starting center Jared Homan pleaded guilty to charges of public intoxication. Then, on Apr. 28, the Des Moines Register published photos taken by a University of Missouri student of former head coach Larry Eustachy drinking beer and kissing female college students.

Athletics Director Bruce Van De Velde recommended Eustachy’s firing, and Eustachy resigned May 5 after protests on campus and legal negotiations between his attorneys and the university. Eustachy said he was an alcoholic and was seeking treatment, and has not appeared publicly since his resignation.

Eustachy’s settlement with Iowa State will pay him $960,000.

Before resigning, Eustachy was suspended for one game by the NCAA for giving small amounts of money to players for making free throws, an NCAA rules violation.

On May 14, Morgan was hired as Iowa State’s new coach after being an assistant for one season. He then convinced four recruits to honor their commitments to the Cyclones.

Vroman’s junior season was his first at Iowa State after transferring from Snow Community College in Ephraim, Utah. He averaged 12.5 points per game, ranking second on Iowa State’s 17—14 team, and led the Cyclones with 9.4 rebounds per game.
