Wilson cut from WNBA

Former ISU standout point guard Lindsey Wilson was in a tough situation with the WNBA’s Connecticut Sun.

Two veteran point guards, Shannon Johnson and Debbie Black, were ahead of Wilson on the Sun’s depth chart.

Wilson was a rookie, a third-round draft choice after completing her college career at Iowa State this spring.

On Wednesday, Wilson was one of three players cut by the Sun to reduce their roster to 11 players.

Wilson played in two of the Sun’s three preseason games for a total of four minutes. She recorded a steal and two missed shots.

She said while not playing was frustrating, she understood that head coach Mike Thibault had an entire roster to analyze.

This is Connecticut’s first season in the WNBA after moving from Orlando.

“You go from being the first person on the bench to the last,” she said. “I know it was a hard decision for the coaches.”

Wilson said she is still hoping to catch on with another WNBA team, such as her hometown team, the Seattle Storm.

“I’m hoping that one of the teams will decide they need another point guard,” she said.

Wilson said she discovered a lot about professional basketball during her brief time with Connecticut.

“I think I learned that I can definitely play at that level,” she said.

“It’s fun to see all of these smart, mature women who have made a career out of playing basketball. That’s what they do for a living.

“That’s what I want to do.”

Wilson led Iowa State in scoring in 2002—2003 by averaging 19.0 points per game. She is the career school record holder for assists, totaling 589 from 1999—2003.

A three-year starter at Iowa State, Wilson was a large contributor on three Cyclone NCAA Tournament teams, including two Sweet 16 appearances.

Wilson was the sixth Cyclone to be selected in the WNBA Draft since 2000. Desir‚e Francis, Stacy Frese, Megan Taylor, Angie Welle and Tracy Gahan were the others.

The Cyclones compiled a 90—37 record during Wilson’s career.
