Second Top-10 upset in women’s sights

The ISU women’s basketball team will attempt to knock off another Top 10 team, this time on the road, when they face seventh-ranked Texas Tech on Sunday.

With their victory over Oklahoma State on Wednesday night, they evened their conference record at 4-4, which puts them in a four-way tie for fifth place in the Big 12.

After starting their conference season 1-3, ISU senior Lindsey Wilson is proud of her team’s effort, but she said the team isn’t finished yet.

“Being .500 in the Big 12, I think is not a small accomplishment,” she said.

“We’re not going to sit around and celebrate being 4-4. We just want to keep building and keep getting better throughout the whole season, and hopefully finish above .500.”

The Cyclones’ (9-10, 4-4 Big 12) victory against Oklahoma State showed just how well they could play, as well as how bad. After leading the Cowgirls 42-18 at halftime, they allowed Oklahoma State to close the gap to 45-41 before rediscovering their groove and pulling away, winning the game 79-55.

“I’ve coached a lot of years. I can’t remember a game like that,” said ISU head coach Bill Fennelly. “It felt like we won a two-out-of-three series in the WNBA playoffs or something.”

The Cyclones were led by sophomore Lisa Kriener’s second double-double of the season. She finished with 27 points and 13 rebounds.

Kriener credits her teammates with getting her confidence up in practice, especially after her performance in the Baylor game last Saturday, where she was 2-10 from the floor, and finished with just seven points.

“It’s been like that all year. I feel a lot better when I start off with a good game,” she said.

“Baylor was a hard, hard game. We definitely needed to pick it up.”

Now Iowa State travels to Lubbock in search of just their second conference road victory this season.

Fennelly is looking forward to the matchup.

“It’s going to be a great environment. Texas Tech is a great place to play,” he said.

“They always draw great and it’s on ESPN2. [We are] the prohibitive underdog, obviously. Hopefully, we come up with a way to play them and compete with them.”

The Red Raiders (18-2, 7-1) are riding a three-game win streak heading into Sunday’s game. They have had a week off to prepare for the Cyclones. Their last game was Saturday when they pasted Kansas 84-57.

Texas Tech has recently been riding the hot shooting of senior forward/center Plenette Pierson scored 29 points against the Jayhawks, following up her career-high performance of 32 points against Missouri.

Fennelly feels that his team will find out just how good they are in the next few games, when they face road games at Missouri and Oklahoma, and host Texas next Saturday.

“We’re going into the toughest week of our season. We play at Texas Tech. Then we go to Missouri, and everyone knows what happened when we played Missouri here,” he said of Iowa State’s 86-55 loss on Jan. 19.

“This is a week where you look at it as opportunity, you look at it as we better figure it out quick,” Fennelly said.

“I think at the end of next week, we’ll be licking our wounds pretty bad, or looking at, hey, we’ve got a shot.”
