Two Story County inmates await transport to Miami

Two men wanted by Florida authorities in connection with a robbery-homicide are being held at the Story County Jail after they were arrested by the Ames Police Department on unrelated charges.

Ames Police arrested Andre Williams and Milton Hall Feb. 15 and charged the men with possession of a controlled substance, false report to a police officer, fourth-degree criminal mischief and harassment of a public officer, local authorities said.

Ames Police Cmdr. Jim Robinson said the men provided false identification to authorities. When the men met with a judge the morning after their arrests, the judge required them to produce proper identification.

Williams and Hall were both transported to the Story County Jail. An officer in the Story County Jail decided to look into the identity of the two individuals and made some phone calls to other law enforcement agencies, said Capt. Gary Foster of the Story County Sheriff’s office.

The officer discovered the men were wanted by authorities in Miami in connection with a robbery at a Miami jewelry store where a security guard was shot and killed, Robinson said.

Foster said the men will most likely be transported back to Miami. “They have waived extradition and we anticipate Miami authorities will come and pick them up,” he said.

Ames Police arrested the men after they received a call Feb. 15 from Cyclone Cab reporting a window had been broken out in one of their cabs. The men riding in the cab had refused to pay for the window.

Police officers were dispatched to the Howard Johnson hotel, 1709 South Duff Ave., where the men had been dropped off. When officers approached the hotel room, both ran from police. They were later found outside of Movies 12, 1317 Buckeye Ave., Robinson said. He said the men probably wouldn’t have been caught if they had just paid for the broken window in the cab.
