Council reiterates commitment to diversity after vandalism

The Professional and Scientific Council has reaffirmed its commitment to an environment of diversity on the ISU campus.

President Rex Heer said a resolution was passed at a meeting Thursday in response to recent graffiti that contained hate speech on two campus buildings Nov. 18. “Die Fag Die” was written outside of the Durham building and “Dean of Fags” was written outside of the Student Services Building, Heer said.

“The P&S Council believes that our campus is enriched and enlivened by diversity of all kinds,” the resolution stated. “The council also supports free speech, open debate, and the expression of diverse ideas and opinions. Given this, we have an obligation to promote an environment where discrimination, harassment, or threatening behavior directed toward any group or individual is not tolerated.”

Heer said the council hopes to send a message that this type of expression will not be tolerated.

Heer said they will forward the resolution to President Gregory Geoffroy, the provost, and the vice presidents. The resolution will not change any rules, it simply offers the council’s advice on the issue.

Jeremy Hayes, coordinator for the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Student Services, also spoke Thursday night, about what services were provided for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) students and gave the council an update about the Safe Zone project.

The Safe Zone project involves placing Safe Zone stickers on areas around campus to give a message of non-judgement of LGBT students, faculty, staff and their allies, Heer said.

Hayes said he thought the resolution was great.

“I think it is especially good in the way they chose to pass it,” Hayes said.

He said the council not only said that vandalism wasn’t tolerated, but they also said diversity was important at Iowa State.

In addition to showing support for students and staff who felt threatened by the graffiti, Hayes said it also spoke to students who may have agreed with the writings.
