Katelyn Quinn scored two goals, one in each half, to lift the Iowa Hawkeyes to a 3-1 win over ISU in an intrastate match on Sunday afternoon before a crowd of 378 at the Cyclone Soccer Complex.

It was a tale of two halves for both the Iowa Hawkeyes and the Iowa State Cyclones.

In the first half, Iowa outplayed Iowa State en route to taking a 2-0 lead. In the second half, ISU strikers had numerous opportunities to score, but couldn’t produce a goal.

It was the last regular-season home game for seniors Tiffany Belz, Megan DiGiacomo and Lauren Sims.

Iowa State drops to 7-10-1 overall. They open up the Big 12 Conference tournament as the No. 7 seed and will play No. 2 seed Texas on Thursday in San Antonio, Texas, at 5 p.m.

“We’re definitely disappointed. The girls have to come out and play 90 minutes of soccer and I think there was definitely a letdown today,” Iowa State interim head coach Rebecca Hornbacher said.

The Cyclones got on the scoreboard early in the first half when freshman forward Kristina Baumann scored her team leading seventh goal from Erin Weldon at the 2:32 mark.

But Iowa answered quickly as Sarah Lynch trickled in a shot past ISU goalkeeper Beth Chapman to knot the score at 1-1 at the 12:06 mark. Quinn scored her first goal in the contest just before the half to put the Hawkeyes up 2-1. In the first half, Iowa had a commanding 12-5 advantage on shots.

DiGiacomo said that the team struggled throughout the game. “We didn’t come out with our game like we should have,” DiGiacomo said. “We did score first, but we knew that we needed to get another one in the net. We get pretty unlucky sometimes. We get some great opportunities. We just need to finish them.”

In the second half, the Cyclones came out more aggressive in the offensive zone, as they outshot Iowa 12-3 but weren’t able to translate that into goals. Hawkeye goalkeeper Britta Vogele had 10 saves, including seven in the second half.

Katie Poole fed Owen at the 77:18 mark in the half to put Iowa up 3-1. Owen had six shots on goal while Sarah Lynch added five. Baumann, Deb Benakis and Lindsey Lees all had four shots for ISU.

Hornbacher wasn’t pleased with the way the Cyclones played defensively. “We just weren’t solid enough defensively. You can give a player a yard, but when you give them 10 yards, you give them too much,” Hornbacher said.

Even with the loss, the Cyclones will be practicing Monday before heading out to San Antonio on Tuesday for the conference tournament.

“I think every team progresses throughout the season,” Hornbacher said. “We’re young, so we’ve grown a lot as a team. … We’re a confident group right now.”
