Weak-hearted fans: Beware.Iowa State is back on track.

The Cyclones became bowl eligible and kept their hopes alive for a Big 12 North title behind Seneca Wallace’s record-setting day, beatingMissouri 42-35.

Wallace broke his own school record with 425 passing yards, and led Iowa State (7-3, 4-2 Big 12) on a 93-yard game-winning drive. Michael Wagner’s 1-yard touchdown run with 32 seconds remaining put Iowa State on top for good.

Freshman quarterback Brad Smith led Missouri (4-5,1-4), passing for 241 yards and rushing for 77.

“If you’re a fan and had a good heart, it would have been fun to watch,” ISU head coach Dan McCarney said. “If you didn’t have a good heart, that’d be hard on you.”

The Cyclones led 27-14 after Adam Benike’s 44-yard field goal with6:13 remaining in the second quarter, and looked to build on the lead after a Missouri three-and-out. But Wallace fumbled and Missouri’s Atiyyah Ellison recovered, giving the Tigers the ball with 3:11 left in the half.

Smith converted a fourth-down play for the Tigers and three plays later it was Zack Abron bulling his way through the line for the score, bringingMissouri within six points at the half.

After blocking a punt by Tony Yelk with just over eight minutes left in the third quarter, Missouri took its first lead of the game. On the first play of the drive, Smith found Darius Outlaw in the middle of the field and he outraced the ISU defenders 55 yards down the sideline for the touchdown.

The Cyclones stormed back with Wagner’s second touchdown, a 10-yard run. On the subsequent two-point try, two key blocks sprung Wallace to the goal line givingIowa State the 35-28 edge.

ButIowa State would see its lead evaporate again when Marcus James took a punt return back 80 yards for the touchdown with 10:26 remaining in the fourth quarter.

After forcing Missouri to punt, the Cyclones got the ball back deep in their own end with 3:23 remaining. Wallace, who also had 68 yards rushing, got 33 of them on a critical third-down conversion with 1:18 left. Five plays later, Wagner busted through for the game-winner.

ISU receiver Lane Danielsen, who led the Cyclones with 152 yards on eight catches, had one word to sum up Wallace’s performance.

“Unbeliveable,” Danielsen said. “The guy never ceases to amaze me and in my opinion he’s the best player in college football right now. …I’m glad we’ve got him.”
