Fliers about greeks elicits anger toward residence hall Varieties team

A representative from the Barker House Varieties team said the group has faced harsh reactions to fliers they placed about being a non-greek organization participating in Varieties.

The group requested $600 Thursday from the Inter-

Residence Hall Association.

Megan Ruxton, director of Barker House Varieties and freshman in political science, said hers is the only non-greek organization participating in the event.

She said fliers placed by her group to advertise had received negative reactions from members of the greek community because they contained the line, “Tired of being pushed around by the greeks? Join Varieties.”

“I received phone calls and e-mails from people who told me they were offended by the wording of fliers or flat-out threatened or harassed me.”

One caller, Ruxton said, told her, “If you think we’re pushing you around now, just wait. You’d better watch your step.”

Ruxton said 800 posters were printed and placed in residence halls before she had a chance to look them over.

She said the posters would not be taken down. “I’m just letting it go. I thought it was something kind of silly to get angry about.”

Ruxton said Barker House, in Lyon Hall, has a long history of participating in Varieties.

“Anyone who’s interested can join at any time,” she said.

The group practices in Maple-Willow-Larch conference room, Room 315, Sunday, Monday, Wednesday and Thursday at 10 p.m. IRHA will vote on the $600 appropriation at its next meeting.

IRHA approved giving $900 to Madrigal Dinners, a medieval event that involves music, costumes and dancing.
