IRHA to vote on order against locking doors

The Inter-Residence Hall Association will vote at Thursday’s meeting on an order calling for residence hall doors to remain unlocked.

Colleen Prosser, Towers Residence Association treasurer and co-author of the bill, said there seems to be a general sentiment among IRHA members that the door-locking policy is not what students want or need.

“Door-locking would be a great inconvenience for a lot of students,” Prosser said. “The fact that they still want to leave at least one door to every building open means that you’re not really going to have an increase in security.”

Prosser said she hopes the Department of Residence will listen to IRHA’s opinion on the issue.

“In the past, they’ve always given us at least the consideration of looking at what we have to say,” she said.

Prosser said TRA President Dave Breutzmann has set up a meeting with Associate Director of the Department of Residence Ginny Arthur and is working on scheduling a meeting with Vice-president of Student Affairs Thomas Hill to discuss IRHA’s stance on the issue.

A bill to fund the effort to get the National Affiliate of College and University Residence Halls [NACURH] to be held at Iowa State in 2004 will also be introduced.

Eric Peters, Willow Hall representative, said NACURH is a leadership conference that was started in 1954. The first conference was held at Iowa State. Peters said it would be meaningful to have NACURH return to Iowa State on its 50th anniversary.

“I went to NACURH in May,” Peters said, “and it’s one of the most beneficial things that people in leadership positions can do.”

Peters said the money allotted by IRHA would be spent on a computer, phones, and Internet access to communicate with other schools about the event, and paper supplies for the bid presentation.

IRHA will also vote on a bill to fund part of the fee for Dance Marathon speaker Bill Halamandaris.

“He’s speaking on leadership issues,” said Nick Leitheiser, Richardson Court Association at-large.

Leitheiser said Dance Marathon was able to get Halamandaris at a discounted price because he was already planning to be in town the weekend of the event.

Halamandaris is scheduled to speak October 14 at 7 p.m. in the South Ballroom of the Memorial Union.

Other business:

* A seating bill for the director of special events.

* A bill to transfer academic programming to special events.

* A bill to remove The Order of Rose and Chessman from IRHA’s executive board.

The meeting will be held at 7 p.m. in the Wallace-Wilson Conference Room.
