Israeli consulate to discuss terrorism

The Honorable Moshe Ram, Israel’s consulate general to the Midwestern United States, will be on campus Thursday to discuss Israel’s response to terrorism.

Ram’s presentation, “Israel’s Long Quest for Peace: Defeating Terrorism,” will detail history and conflict between Israel and the Palestinian-occupied Gaza Strip and West Bank.

The presentation is open to the public in 1010 LeBaron Hall from 5 to 6:30 p.m.

Jonathan Gritz, president of ISU Hillel and sophomore in construction engineering, said students should take advantage of a “rare opportunity” to hear Ram speak in person.

“Oftentimes we get our news from The Associated Press,” he said. “It’s rare to be able to get the perspective directly from the Israeli government.”

Murray Kaplan, president of the Ames Jewish Congregation and professor of food science and human nutrition, said the presentation will help campus and community members better understand the Israeli and Jewish perspectives.

Terrorism in Israel is a growing problem, Kaplan said.

“[The terrorists] are acting out of a distorted political and religious conviction,” he said. “People on both sides are suffering. There needs to be conditions to ensure Israeli protection.”

Kaplan said the presentation will serve as a reminder of domestic terrorism as well.

“The people in the Washington area are feeling a similar terror to what people in the Israeli and Jewish communities are feeling every day in Israel,” he said.

An open question-and-answer session will follow the presentation.

Ram will head to Des Moines to represent Israel at the World Food Prize International Symposium after his visit to Iowa State.

The presentation is sponsored by the Ames Jewish Congregation, the Board of Governors for the Jewish Federation of Greater Des Moines and ISU Hillel.
