An ISU freshman was charged Friday with harboring a runaway child and contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

Robert Miller, freshman in pre-computer science, was arrested by ISU Police after a 16-year-old female runaway was found in his residence Oct. 14, Capt. Gene Deisinger said.

Miller is from Edina, Minn.

Deisinger said police received a phone call the morning of Oct. 14, from the runaway’s guardians in Minnesota. The girl had been missing from home since Oct. 10, and her guardians asked police to check for her at Miller’s dorm room, 4140 Storms Hall.

Police discovered the juvenile in Miller’s room and turned her over to authorities until she could be sent back to Minnesota.

Deisinger said police interviewed Miller, the girl’s guardians and the runaway.

“Based on information from all of those parties, we applied for and obtained a warrant for arrest,” Deisinger said.

Miller was arrested and taken to Story County Jail in Nevada and held on a $9,000 bond, Deisinger said.

Miller was charged with an aggravated misdemeanor for harboring the runaway, Deisinger said. Miller could face up to two years in jail or a fine ranging from $500 to $5,000 if found guilty.

He was also charged with a simple misdemeanor for contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

“Essentially he provided alcohol and marijuana to the minor,” Deisinger said.

Miller could face a fine ranging from $50 to $500 and/or up to 30 days in jail if found guilty on these charges.

According to court records, he is currently out on bail.

Miller declined to comment on his arrest.

His first court appearance is scheduled for Oct. 28, at 1 p.m. in the Story County Justice Center. According to court records, Miller does not yet have an attorney.
