IRHA bill would separate committee

A bill to separate the duties of the conference committee from the Inter-Residence Hall Association will be introduced at Thursday’s meeting.

The meeting will be at 7 p.m. in the Maple-Willow-Larch large conference room.

The bill was authored by Towers Residence Association President David Breutzmann, TRA Treasurer Colleen Prosser and Director of Conferences Heather Minish.

“The administration of conferences themselves works better if it’s a separate entity from IRHA,” Breutzmann said. “It makes things easier.”

IRHA President Keith Twombley said the duties of the conference committee include selecting delegates to go to leadership conferences, getting conferences to come to Iowa State, meeting with delegates and coordinating with other schools.

He said he believes most members of IRHA are in agreement with the bill.

“Conferences is a lot of money,” Twombley said. “They need to be split off into a separate organization so they can find suitable funding.”

Twombley said the conference committee has to follow both the rules of the outside organizations it works with and IRHA rules, which can sometimes contradict each other.

Breutzmann said he expected the duties of the conferences committee to change little or none.

“The only change would be the addition of fund raising,” he said.

Prosser said the separation would allow conferences more flexibility in sending delegates to leadership conferences because it would allow Frederiksen Court residents to be delegates also, who are not currently part of IRHA.

Breutzmann said members of the conference committee would be charged with finding a way to smoothly make the transition.

“Separating conferences out is a moderately difficult task,” he said.

“The purpose [of the committee presentation] is to set goals and deadlines so it can be done calmly instead of haphazardly.”

The bill calls for the conference committee to present its plan for separation before the end of the current semester.
