Former ISU player sought by police

Police are looking for former ISU football player Justin Eilers after results confirmed a substance found in his apartment tested positive for steroids.

“We are attempting to make contact with Mr. Eilers and find out what basis he has to have those materials,” said Capt. Gene Deisinger of ISU Police.

Charges have yet to be filed and police said they are waiting to find out if Eilers has a prescription to possess the steroids. Deisinger said they have been unable to locate him at this point.

“My understanding is that Mr. Eilers no longer lives in the community,” Deisinger said. “We have information that he may be living in another city in Iowa and we are trying to find him there.”

Margaret Eilers, Justin Eilers’ stepmother, said she has not heard from her stepson for a while. She said he was planning on visiting his family this week in Idaho, but she heard through another relative he couldn’t afford it. “I understand he is in Ames at his girlfriend’s apartment,” she said.

There is a possibility Eilers will face charges, Deisinger said. “Presuming he has no legal basis to have the controlled substance, he would face a serious misdemeanor charge of possession of a controlled substance,” he said.

Police learned of the substances in Eilers’ apartment through his former roommate Aaron Howard, junior in exercise and sport science, according to a police search warrant.

Howard went to police after Eilers assaulted him at work, according to police reports. Both worked for Iowa State doing landscaping this summer.

According to the police search warrant, Howard said Eilers had become violent and was “raging with the intent to kill me.”

Howard told police Eilers was on steroids and explained where to find the substances in the apartment.

Police obtained a search warrant and went to 1525 Little Blue Stem, Apt. #25. They obtained items including one bottle of Testanon, one bottle of anabolic steroids, syringes, one Glad plastic container with seeds and a green bowl containing stems and ashes, according to the search warrant.

Eilers is no longer on the ISU football team due to eligibility rules, said Bill Smith, director of compliance in the athletic department. Eilers was on the team for the past four years, which is the maximum amount an individual can play on a team.

Smith said while Eilers was a member of the team, he was required to take drug tests by the NCAA, Big 12 and Iowa State. He did not say whether those tests were positive for steroids.

“I can’t comment on any individual testing because of the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act,” Smith said. He did say, however, that he received reports from Deisinger stating steroids were found at Eilers residence.

Margaret Eilers said she didn’t know anything about the situation with her stepson.

“He keeps as much as he can away from his parents,” she said.
