Soccer team wins first two games

The ISU women’s soccer team won the Falcon Invitational over the weekend to start the season 2-0 for the first time in the program’s history.

The Cyclones beat Air Force 3-0 on Friday and Gonzaga 2-1 in overtime on Monday to secure the championship.

Iowa State’s victory over Air Force was the first win for interim head coach Rebecca Hornbacher, and it was the Cyclones’ first road win since a 3-2 victory at Texas Tech on Oct. 20, 2000.

The 3-0 score was also Iowa State’s largest margin of victory on the road since a win at Texas Tech on Nov. 1, 1998.

Kelly Burke, Nikki Gamble and Arlene Samuel all scored goals in the match with assist coming from freshman Kristina Baumann.

ISU junior goalkeeper Beth Chapman notched her sixth career shutout.

In Monday’s win over Gonzaga, Gamble’s goal tied the score at 1-1 in the 84th minute to push the match into overtime.

Seven minutes into the extra period, Baumann scored the game winner, her first goal as a Cyclone.

Ashley Haugen got the win in the goal for the Cyclones.

The win over Gonzaga was Iowa State’s first Labor Day game, and it improved Iowa State’s all-time overtime record to 7-4-5.

Next action for Iowa State is Sept. 6 and Sept. 8 when they host Arizona, Northern Iowa and Wisconsin in the Cyclone Classic at the ISU Soccer Complex.
