Cylcones hammer Tennessee Tech

Different week, same story.

Iowa State jumped out to a 37-0 lead in the second quarter and never looked back, pounding Tennessee Tech 58-6 Saturday at Jack Trice Stadium.

Hiawatha Rutland rushed for 138 yards on 17 carries and Seneca Wallace threw for 230 yards and three touchdowns before being replaced by Chris Love late in the third quarter. Todd Miller also returned a punt 60 yards for a score.

Last week, the Cyclones drilled Kansas 45-3. Since falling behind Florida State 24-0 in the season-opener, Iowa State has outscored its opponents 134-23.

“It was a big win overall,” ISU head coach Dan McCarney said. “We’d like to be 3-0 now. We’ve had a lot of improvement and have made some great strides.”

The defense once again set the tone early for the Iowa State (2-1, 1-0 Big 12). Tennessee Tech (0-2) didn’t get past midfield on offense until the 4:43 mark in the second quarter. Iowa State also produced three turnovers in the game.

On Tennessee Tech quarterback Robert Craft’s rollout in the second quarter, he was hit by Iowa State’s Tyson Smith as the ball left his hand. Smith was credited with the sack and Craft was penalized for intentional grounding as the pass fell incomplete. The play sent Tennessee Tech back to their own 9-yard line.

After two more penalties against the Golden Eagles and an incomplete pass, Craft’s third down pass was intercepted by Steve Paris. He returned it 24 yards for the touchdown, expanding the ISU lead to 30-0 and sending the crowd into a frenzy.

It’s always good when you can score on defense and special teams,” defensive lineman Jordan Carstens said. It takes the pressure off the offense.”

The Cyclone offense was equally impressive. ISU receivers Jamaul Montgomery, Lane Danielsen and Lance Young all had over 50 receiving yards. Montgomery led the way with 79 yards on three catches. The junior also had two touchdowns.

“We looked alright,” Wallace said, “but sometimes we lost our focus.”

Rutland said despite the large margin of victory, there’s plenty of lessons to be learned in a game like this.

“We got to work on depth and we also learned how to play with a lead,” Rutland said.

Many reserves saw action in the second half, including linebacker Jimmy Morris, who replaced Brandon Brown who went down with a pulled groin.

“I looked out there a whole bunch in that game and you’ve got [Nick] Leaders playing nose guard and Morris playing linebacker-those are two true freshmen out there,” McCarney said. “It was real valuable experience for all of them.”

McCarney said his team will immediately turn their attention to next week’s game. The Cyclones face the Iowa Hawkeyes with a four-game winning streak in the series on the line.

“We’ve got to step up on our preparation, intensity and focus now, going into the Iowa State-Iowa game this week,” McCarney said.
