IRHA parliament faces vote on conference bill

The Inter-Residence Hall Association will vote on whether the conferences committee should be separate from the organization.

The meeting will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday in the Oak Room of the Memorial Union.

“I think the bill has a lot of support in IRHA,” said Keith Twombley, IRHA president. “This issue came up last year and some people were very against the idea, and some of those people are in support of it this year.”

One of the advantages of the bill, he said, was that it would allow the possibility of residents of Frederiksen Court to raise money to go to conferences.

“It’s not a guarantee,” Twombley said, “but there’s a possibly that if the government of Frederiksen Court decide to help fund conferences, some people from Frederiksen Court could go to conferences.”

Under current rules Frederiksen Court is not part of IRHA and does not pay dues to the organization, so they are not eligible to attend residence hall conferences, he said.

However, they’re considered residence halls by the fact that they are owned by the Department of Residence and therefore eligible to attend conferences under the rules of the conference NACURH (National Affiliate of College and University Residence Halls), Twombley said.

A representative for Dance Marathon was scheduled to speak to parliament, but has been postponed until next week.

The purpose of the visit was to increase awareness of Dance Marathon in the residence halls, said Dance Marathon Recruitment Co-Chairman Cole Kopacek. “Our goal is to have 600 to 700 dancers,” said Kopacek, junior in marketing.

New this year is the Miracle Award, which allows residence hall floors to team up and get points for attending Dance Marathon events, said Jenny Schweisberger, Dance Marathon recruitment co-chairwoman and senior in journalism and mass communication.

She said the greek system will have a similar competition.

“There’s so much strength in residence halls that really needs to be utilized,” Schweisberger said.
