`The Mayor’ back for youth basketball camp

Former ISU basketball star Fred Hoiberg will be back in Ames later this month for his summer basketball camp.

Hoiberg played four seasons with the Indiana Pacers after being drafted in the second round of the 1995 NBA draft out of Iowa State. He has spent the last three seasons with the Chicago Bulls.

He was a three-time all-Big 8 selection while at Iowa State and is regarded as one of the most complete players to grace the floor at Hilton Coliseum.

Boys entering grades two through 10 in the fall of 2002 are welcome to participate. The camp will be held at the Lied Recreation Center on the ISU campus Aug. 12-16. The camp features fundamental skill instruction, daily full-court games, a shooting lecture by Hoiberg, outstanding coaches and contests. Emphasis will be placed on the fundamentals of basketball, work ethic, teamwork and sportsmanship. Cost of the camp is $140.

Campers receive a T-shirt, camp prizes and a picture/autograph session with Hoiberg on the last day of the camp.

The official deadline to apply is today, but Michael Born, director for the camp, said the camp will accept walk-ups on the first day of the camp.

He said there are currently about 120 campers signed up, allowing for an excellent player-to-coach ratio.

“It’s not huge numbers,” Born said. “I think that [number of campers] is a pretty good start for a camp that’s run three summers and then been off three summers.”

Born said Hoiberg had his camp in Ames for three summers from 1996 through 1998, but has skipped the last three summers to concentrate on improving his stock in the NBA as a free agent.

This will be the first time Born has helped coordinate and direct the Hoiberg camp.

“I’ve done camps with about five or six NBA players and . . . I just want to come in and make sure we do a good job starting now,” he said.
