Sanderson, Welle, Curtis honored

Four-time undefeated national champion wrestler Cael Sanderson, two-time All-American center Angie Welle and four-time All-American high jumper Gina Curtis have been named Iowa State’s male and co-female student-athletes of the year, respectively, by the ISU athletic awards committee.

The most decorated collegiate wrestler in history, Sanderson capped off his senior season career with a 159-0 record. Sanderson propelled Iowa State to a second-place team finish at the NCAA Championships. The Heber City, Utah, native recently won the U.S. National Freestyle Open title by beating Lee Fullhart 4-0.

Welle ended her brilliant four-year career as the all-time leading scorer (2,149), rebounder (1,209) and shot-blocker (155) in ISU women’s basketball history. She averaged career-highs in both scoring (20.5 ppg) and rebounding (11.3) in 2001-02.

Curtis, a junior from Brooklyn Park, Minn., once again defied the odds by earning All-America honors in both the indoor and outdoor high jump in 2001-02. She was second in the high jump at the NCAA indoor championship and fourth in the NCAA outdoor championship. Curtis has accomplished all of these feats after enduring four knee surgeries, forcing her to switch jumping legs from the left to right.
