Sanderson to throw first pitch

Iowa State wrestler Cael Sanderson will throw out the first pitch at the June 24 game between the Chicago White Sox and the Minnesota Twins at the Metrodome in Minneapolis. The game starts at 7:05 p.m.

Sanderson made wrestling history in March when he became the first undefeated four-time national champion in collegiate history. The Heber City, Utah native won his second straight U.S. Open Freestyle title in April. Following the completion of his career at ISU, Sanderson was hired by the athletic department as an administrative assistant.

He will compete at U.S. World Team Trials, June 20-23 in Minneapolis for a spot on the the U.S. team that will compete at the World Championships Sept. 4-7 in Tehran, Iran.

Sanderson threw out the first pitch and then led a Wrigley Field crowd in “Take Me Out to the Ball Game” June 1 in Chicago.

ISU swimmers win scholarship

Former Iowa State swimmers Catherine Voorhees and Erin Endres have been awarded $5,000 postgraduate scholarships by the Big 12 Conference.

To be eligible for the scholarship an athlete must have earned a cumulative GPA of at least 3.5, participated in at least two years of intercollegiate athletics at the same institution and completed their athletic eligibility.

Endres, a Hutchinson, Minn. native, was one of ISU’s most successful swimmers and relay performers, co-captaining the 2001-02 squad. She is a former Cyclone record holder as a member of the 4×200-yard freestyle relay, and was a high school All-American in Hutchinson. A psychology major, Endres also earned Phi Beta Kappa honors at Iowa State.

A native of Waukee, Iowa, Voorhees was also one of the Cyclones’ top seniors in 2001-02. She excelled in both the 500-meter and 1,000-meter freestyle events, finishing in the top 10 individually in several multiteam meets.

Voorhees is a biology major with plans of pursuing a Ph.D. in nutritional sciences at Iowa State. She was also a member of the Big 12 Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.
