Heskett wins Scholarship

Former ISU wrestler Joe Heskett has been awarded a $15,000 scholarship by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA).

The John McLendon Memorial Minority Postgraduate Scholarship is given annually in honor of the late John McLendon, a pioneer for African-American athletics administrators.

“It’s a great honor and privilege to receive the scholarship,” Heskett said. “I was very blessed to even be among the nominations for the award.”

Heskett, who was the 2002 NCAA 165-pound champion, graduated from Iowa State in December 2001 with a Bachelor of Arts in speech communication.

He plans to enroll in graduate school at California Polytechnic State University to earn a master’s in athletics administration.

Cyclones make All-Region

ISU softball players Lindsey Herrin and Erica Martinez have been named to the 2002 Midwest All-Region softball team.

As a freshman, Herrin batted .318 and led the team in home runs and RBI to earn second team honors at first base.

Martinez was also a second team selection as a utility player. She hit .383 and had 10 home runs for the Cyclones this season. This is the second time she has been chosen for the Midwest All-Region team.

NFL Pro-Bowlers at football camp

Two former NFL All-Pro players will headline the ISU football camps this summer.

Reggie Roby will be a guest lecturer at the 2002 Iowa State Kicking Camp on June 8. Roby, a former All-American punter at the University of Iowa, has kicked for five NFL teams.

Former Iowa State offensive lineman Keith Sims will be an instructor at both ISU football padded-session camps held June 9-12 and June 12-15.

Sims played 11 seasons in the NFL for the Miami Dolphins and Washington Redskins. He helped Dan Marino put up big numbers as quarterback and made three straight trips to the Pro Bowl while at Miami.
