Weather doesn’t hinder success of 80th Veishea

Despite the rain this weekend, members of the 2002 Veishea executive board consider the celebration a huge success.

“There was a great turnout with the student body and faculty,” said Jen Fritz, Veishea general co-chair. She said everything went just as well as it could have.

“Whenever you have an event, you wonder what the attendance will be,” said Fritz, senior in genetics. “We were just hoping for the best turn-out, and we definitely got it.”

Both Soul Asylum and Jay Mohr, performers for Rock the Rec and Dew the Rec, had positive attendance, Fritz said. About 300 attended Soul Asylum, while more than 1,000 turned out for Jay Mohr.

“The ticket sales were fine and they were both successful,” Fritz said.

Alyssa Armbrecht, special events co-chair, agreed that Veishea went very well, regardless of the rain.

“The whole week went wonderfully,” said Armbrecht, senior in food science.

Despite Veishea being dry, Armbrecht said she thinks people still enjoyed themselves.

“I’m the oldest person on Veishea exec. – I’m the only one who remembers a wet Veishea,” Armbrecht said. “When we made the switch [to a dry Veishea], it was hard for the ISU community and students to accept the change. ISU students who are mad because it changed don’t remember what chaos it was.”

Through the week, Veishea buttons were available to buy for $1. The buttons allowed people to eat for free during the week at a tent on Central Campus. Armbrecht said about 1,800 people were served on one of the days, which was a record number.

The buttons sold out Wednesday this year. The same number of buttons took until Saturday to sell out last year, Armbrecht said.

Armbrecht hopes the success of this year will influence future celebrations.

“The record-setting attendance at this year’s events will be indicative of what Veishea will be in the next 80 years.”
