Mohr gives 1,000 laughs

Dolphin genitalia dominated Dew the Rec Friday night.

Despite his dead-on impressions of celebrities from Bono to Christopher Walken and a preference for jokes about his own junk, Jay Mohr aroused the greatest response from the audience of more than 1,000 with a story about his first time swimming with dolphins.

“I got really high before I swam with the dolphins,” Mohr said. “Because if I was going to swim with the dolphins, I was going to swim with the dolphins.”

Falling asleep during instructions that warned him he “was on his own” if he touched the dolphin below the waist, Mohr dove into new sexual territory as he massaged his new sea mammal friend.

“I was basically jerking off a dolphin,” Mohr explained to a thoroughly amused crowd.

“Probably the story about the dolphin was what made me laugh the most,” said Sean Davidson, sophomore in community and regional planning. “Just the way he explained it, and saying `dolphin cock’ and `dolphins rock.’ “

The dolphin-related humor came near the end of the hour-and-a-half show by the current host of ESPN’s “Mohr Sports.”

And although he paid tribute to one of his heroes, ISU wrestler Cael Sanderson – “How’d you like to share a jail cell with that guy?” – Mohr only focused briefly on sports.

Instead, he devoted much of his time to rock ‘n’ roll humor – “Remember the first time you found out Hanson was guys? I was crestfallen” – and his well-known Walken impression.

“He has an awesome Christopher Walken [impression],” said Andrew Bolstad, senior in electrical engineering.

Mohr related his experience working with Walken on the film “Suicide Kings.”

“Your dog has no tail,” were Walken’s first words to him, Mohr said. “What happened to your dog’s tail – where did it go? It would be so great to have a tail.”

Later in the day, still unsure of Walken’s sanity, Mohr asked him if he would rather be able to fly or have a tail.

“That is the dumbest question I have ever been asked. A tail of course,” Walken said to Mohr. “You can always get on an airplane with your tail.”

Walken and the dolphin joke drew some of the loudest laughs of the night.

After a joke about how he would like to have sex with Bono, Mohr received a somewhat cold response.

“I forgot I’m in the Midwest – get the rope,” Mohr said.

Outside of the dolphin joke, Mohr’s digs on the crowd may have been some of his most successful humor.

“It seemed like most of his laughs came from when he was making fun of the audience,” said Jace Teed, freshman in history. “We weren’t the best audience for him.”

Still, those gathered for Dew the Rec appreciated the show.

“He was really entertaining,” Teed said. “Probably the most entertaining thing I’ve done this semester.”

Less impressive to the audience was opener Joe Lindley.

“You could just tell Jay had been doing it a little while longer and was more mature,” said Matt Tobelmann, junior in chemical engineering.
