ISU faces Big 12 foes hoping to end slump

The ISU tennis team is looking to break its two-match losing streak and to move up in the Big 12 when they travel to Kansas to play conference rivals Kansas and Kansas State this weekend.

The team, who received its first national ranking of the season last week at No. 68, will play the No. 43-ranked Wildcats on Saturday and the No. 34 Jayhawks on Sunday.

The Cyclones enter this weekend matches with 5-7 record overall and are 1-5 in the Big 12. Kansas State has a record of 8-6 overall and are 3-3 in the Big 12.

Kansas will enter Sunday’s match with a nine-match winning streak. The Jayhawks are 12-3 overall, 6-0 in the Big 12.

In order to compete with these nationally ranked teams, the Cyclones want to keep up their level of play and put all of the components of the game together.

“We want to play well in singles this weekend,” ISU head coach Michele Conlon said. “We’ve been playing outstanding doubles the entire season, but we need to put both our doubles and singles together at once to be successful this weekend.”

Coming off of Big 12 Conferences losses to Texas Tech and Nebraska last weekend, the Cyclones are on a mission for a victory.

“We are out for revenge this weekend,” junior Courtney Leese said.

Conlon said she is pleased that the team is playing both Kansas and Kansas State in the same weekend.

“It is easier to play two big matches back to back because it keeps the flow of match play going,” she said.

Although the Cyclones are facing two quality team this weekend, Conlon said her “veteran team” is up for the challenge.

Leese said there are a few factors which will help the Cyclones immensely if they can pull them off.

“Overall, the team needs to stay extra focused and tough throughout all sets,” she said.
