No winner in IRHA election

Although an announcement was made for the new Inter-Residence Hall Association president and vice president, the group’s election commissioner later determined no candidate had officially won.

After reviewing election bylaws, IRHA Vice President and Election Commissioner David Boike realized that nobody had won the election.

The slate of Keith Twombley, Towers Residence Association president, and Jessi Raim, Union Drive Association at-large, were told they beat the slate of Heather Minish, IRHA director of special events, and Amber Hoermann, UDA vice president. The vote had been counted at 449-409, with 70 write-ins.

After reviewing the bylaws, it was found “each slate must receive a simple majority of the votes cast in order to be elected,” Boike said.

Twombley and Raim were 15 votes short of winning the election.

“I’m pretty sure we need to hold a run-off election,” Boike said. “In essence no one won and IRHA currently has no leaders for next year.”

After the announcement, Raim went to an intramural hockey game and Twombley called friends at TRA to tell them about the victory.

“I had a big group of friends who were helping me through this with everything,” Twombley said. “I called one of the guys to have him tell everyone and they were all really excited for us.”

At the time of press, both Twombley and Raim were not aware of the election review.

“[Twombley] is probably partying right now because he doesn’t know yet,” Boike said. “I just hope I can get a hold of everyone before the news is printed.”

Run-off elections are common in IRHA elections, but a situation like this has not occurred, Boike said.

Boike said after he contacts both slates and other IRHA members, he will contact Academic Information Technology, the group that controls online voting. If AIT is not available, Boike said there will be a traditional paper election in all three associations.

“My best piece of advice to them is to make sure you always keep your residents in mind, because at the end of the day that’s what matters most,” Boike said. “Two great candidates ran in a really close election.”

In other IRHA news, BLFF/N Hall representative Sarai Arnold was impeached after accumulating more than three unexcused absences. IRHA went into executive session for more than an hour to discuss the issue.

“I advertised the position all over BLFF/N, but no one else wants to attend meetings every Thursday night,” Arnold said. “If I’m not here representing them, the residents there will not be given a voice.”
