Huey leads gymnasts to second-place finish

LINCOLN, Neb. – The No. 8 ISU gymnastics team took home second place at the Big 12 Gymnastics Tournament Saturday after losing a heartbreaker to No. 7 Nebraska, 196.725-196.650.

The four-team tournament at the Bob Devaney Sports Center in Lincoln, Neb. also included No. 6 Oklahoma and No. 25 Missouri, who earned third and fourth, respectively.

ISU head coach K.J. Kindler said the difference in the meet came down to one event.

“We didn’t stick our vault landings, and that was where the meet was lost,” she said.

The Cyclones finished third on the event with a 48.950.

However, senior co-captain Sissy Huey grabbed first place in the all-around for the Cyclones with a score of 39.600.

Huey also shared the top spot on the uneven bars with teammate Stephanie Sweitzer, tied for second on the balance beam with Missouri’s Rachel Dombart, received third on the vault with Oklahoma’s Mariana Goncalves and finished in a six-way tie for third on the floor exercise.

Huey’s vault score, 9.875, and beam score, 9.925, tied career-highs.

“First place in the all-around hasn’t sunk in yet,” Huey said. “It was awesome to be up there with Steph in the uneven bars. I didn’t expect us to get first together.”

Sweitzer said she didn’t expect it either.

“I didn’t expect first place. It’s amazing to be at Sissy’s caliber and great to be up there with my teammate,” she said.

Sweitzer’s bars score, 9.900, tied her career high on the event. Her previous high was recorded on the team’s last trip to Nebraska two weeks ago.

Sweitzer received a 9.900 on the balance beam as well, tying for fourth place with Nebraska’s Tami Harris.

Also placing for the Cyclones was senior co-captain Shelly Kringen. Kringen earned eighth in the all-around, tied for fifth on the vault with Goncalves and Nebraska’s Libby Landgraf and tied for sixth on the beam with Rachel Bridges of Missouri and Allison Landis of Oklahoma. Kringen also grabbed a 9.850 on the floor exercise.

Kringen said there was extra pressure for the ones performing at the end of the lineup, but that it didn’t seem to show.

“The people who followed did real well with going in there and picking it up,” she said.

Junior Courtney Sarrett, who picked up a 9.850 on the balance beam to tie last week’s season high, also noted the team’s increased momentum on the last event.

“We were real excited with the [beam]. It really finished off well,” Sarrett said.

Sophomore Sarah Caruthers, making her season’s debut on the uneven bars, and freshman Abigail Richey, who earned a new career high of 9.850 on the beam, also helped the team earn first place in the last two events.

After the competition, medal presentations to place finishers and a senior salute, the Big 12 awarded its 2002 Newcomer of the Year to Alisha Robinson of Missouri. Gymnast of the Year went to Mariana Goncalves of Oklahoma and receiving honors for Coach of the Year were Rob Drass of Missouri and Oklahoma’s Steve Nunno.

Next up for the Cyclones is the NCAA Regionals on April 6. The location will be announced this week.
