Final debate discusses safety, aid

Candidates for executive offices in the Government of the Student Body generated new ideas about campus safety and the accessibility of financial aid during their final debate Thursday.

Speaking at the debate in the Sun Room of the Memorial Union were two slates – presidential candidates T.J. Schneider and Steve Medanic, as well as respective running mates Joe Darr and Andrew Kothenbeutel.

Schneider said if he and Darr are elected they plan to expand the operating hours of the Moonlight Express escort service. Currently, the service only operates until 2 a.m. The slate said the service needs to operate longer to ensure students get home safely.

“There is funding available for this,” he said. “It’s not that expensive, either.”

Schneider said the hours could be extended soon after spring break.

Medanic said making the Office of Student Financial Aid more accessible to student, is a goal of his slate.

“We need to look at what we can do to educate students about financial issues,” Medanic said.

He contended there are more options students can look to for financial aid.

Kothenbeutel said he and Medanic plan to make the Student Financial Aid Counseling services more accessible to students.

“We want to go through and revamp the system and make it more user-friendly,” Kothenbeutel said.
