TCU may have eyes on Kansas assistant

TCU could be close to getting its man.

Even though Kansas is still alive in the NCAA Tournament, TCU will reportedly name Jayhawks assistant Neil Dougherty as its head coach Monday, according to a report in Sunday’s Fort Worth Star Tribune.

A source close to Dougherty told the newspaper that Dougherty has not yet formally accepted the job but was scheduled to do so Sunday night.

“I think you can expect to see him in Fort Worth on Monday,” the source told the Tribune.

The other head candidates were Louisiana-Lafayette head coach Jessie Evans and Wyoming basketball coach Steve McClain, who pulled his name out of the running on Friday.

Dougherty interviewed with TCU officials March 11 and again Monday, and sources told the Tribune that Dougherty also interviewed one other time.

Former Kansas center Raef LaFrentz, now with the Mavericks, gave Dougherty a big endorsement. LaFrentz said he has known Dougherty for six or seven y ears.

“Dougherty is a great guy and a great coach,” LaFrentz said. “Roy Williams does a good job with the X’s and O’s, and he passes that along to his assistants. Anybody who is an assistant coach at Kansas is going to be a head coach before long.”

It would be the first head coaching job for Dougherty, who has been an assistant at Kansas for the past seven seasons under Williams. Dougherty also was an assistant to Eddie Fogler at Vanderbilt (1989-92) and South Carolina (1993-99.)
