No. 8 gymnasts victorious in battle with No. 15 Missouri

The No. 8 ISU gymnastics team won a battle with two ranked teams when it toppled No. 15 Missouri, 195.875 to 194.000.

The Cyclones improved to 1-1 in the Big 12 and 5-1 overall with the win Friday night in Hilton Coliseum.

As a team, Iowa State dominated on the floor exercise, compiling 49.325 points, good for a season-high and seventh highest in team history. The team also achieved a season-high on the uneven bars.

ISU head coach K.J. Kindler said some areas were impressive but others need improvement.

“The floor exercise was beautiful, we were captivating on floor,” she said. “There was also a big improvement on bars. However, the balance beam was rough. We have to be very aggressive yet have to be very relaxed.”

Individually, senior Sissy Huey led the Cyclones, placing first in the all-around with a score of 39.350. She received two scores of 9.900, which placed her first on the uneven bars and second on the floor exercise, with the floor score tying her season’s best. Huey also achieved a new season’s high on the balance beam.

“This was one of my best nights,” Huey said. “My preparation in the gym really helped add confidence.”

Senior Shelly Kringen placed third in the all-around with a 38.350, behind Missouri’s freshman phenom Alisha Robinson, who scored a 39.400.

To start the night, Kringen earned a 9.850 on the vault, placing first.

Later, Kringen fell on the bars and the beam, but came back strong in the floor exercise, placing first with a 9.925, her season’s best.

“It was a little rough tonight,” Kringen said, “I’m going to go back to the gym and work on the bars and beam.”

Kringen said the floor exercise is one of her most consistent routines.

“I have the most fun with that routine,” she said, “I always hit it.”

Freshman Abigail Richey’s night was full of new career and season records. Richey placed third on the uneven bars with a 9.850, a new career-best. She also scored a new career-best on the balance beam and tied her career-best on the floor.

Stephanie Sweitzer picked up another first place finish for the Cyclones, tying for first with Missouri’s Leah Gremaud on the balance beam with a 9.900, her season’s best.

“I had my best performance of the year on beam,” Sweitzer said, “I fell on the beam at Iowa, but I got that out of my head and concentrated on doing a solid routine.”

Karen Kuplicki returned from injury tied Alisha Robinson for second place on the vault with a 9.825. She received her season’s best on the uneven bars and the floor exercise as well.

Chee Chee Calina earned a 9.825 on the balance beam, tying her with Robinson for third on the event. Calina’s score was also her season’s best.

Sarah Caruthers also added to the team’s floor success with a 9.850, tying her career and season’s best.

As a whole, Sweitzer believes the night was a success.

“We had some shaky spots,” Sweitzer said, “but we came together as a team. We added pressure and came through.”

The Cyclone gymnasts will be in action again Friday night, Feb. 15, against Minnesota at Hilton Coliseum.
