A car drove through the front window of Santa Fe Espresso early Sunday morning. The coffee shop will be closed for several days as repairs are completed.

A-Ra Min, senior in hotel, restaurant and institution management, drove a 2002 Lexus through the window of the coffee shop at 116 Welch Ave. shortly after 1 a.m. Sunday, according to police reports.

Min declined to comment.

Dwight Rivera, owner of Santa Fe Espresso, said Min and another person, who was not named in the police report, were in the vehicle at the time of the accident.

Rivera said he thought Min hit the accelerator instead of the brake when she turned right onto Welch Avenue out of the alley south of Santa Fe Espresso, then hit a tree and spun into the front window of the coffee shop.

Another car, owned by Alyssa Armbrecht, senior in food science, was also hit.

Rivera said about $3,500 damage was done to Santa Fe Espresso, which will close the cafe for four to 10 days.

“Insurance will cover it, but they are going to have to pay for it,” Rivera said. “I’m going to lose some business, and that’s not good at all.”

He said they had just re-decorated Santa Fe during winter break.

The car belonged to Guek Wee, sophomore in liberal arts and sciences. Wee, who was not in the car, said he had loaned the car to Min, who does not own a vehicle.

“I was a little upset with my friends, but it was an accident and I can not blame her,” Wee said.

He said he didn’t know where Min was driving from or whether the accident involved alcohol.

“I had only had my car for one month,” Wee said. “The insurance company is paying for everything and [Min] is paying the deductible. If it goes over what my insurance company covers, maybe she will pay.”
