Local rappers, DJs impress with skills

Good music can flow from the most unlikely of sources.

DJs Ace and Dupree, and rappers Angle and Babel Section filled the Boheme with hip-hop Tuesday night.

While one might assume that a scene that gets little coverage is probably lagging behind the rest of the world, these artists proved hip-hop is officially in Iowa.

Taking over the stage Ace and Dupree presented a strong set of laid-back rhymes over silky beats off of Dupree’s album, “Confessions from the Booth.”

The DJs talked to the audience about staying smart and being real between songs.

“Anything you want, it’s yours,” Ace said. “Take it, but use intelligence of course.”

In the next set, Babel Section, consisting of MCs Gai Den, Know1 and DJ JayVee, collaborated with rapper Angle in an impressive display of jaw gymnastics and scratching.

All three rappers flowed with rapid-fire speed and precision while bouncing with enthusiasm that no quiet bistro crowd was going to bring down.

JayVee added to the mix with scratches, tempo changes and constant beat evolutions, at points even sampling and playing around with the MCs’ voices while they were on stage.

A majority of the crowd seemed to be there for reasons other than the performance, but by the end of the night everyone was applausing, and Gai Den said that is exactly what the rappers are trying to accomplish.

“We’re trying to let our neighboring cities and states know that hip-hop does exist in Iowa,” he said. “It’s a quiet storm that’s gonna erupt.”

Boheme owner Peter Sherman said the show increased the club’s diversity.

“Everybody needs a medium for expression, especially alternative mediums,” he said. “Other places play bands; there aren’t many places that offer more eclectic entertainment.”

Gai Den said the artists all have mp3s available at www.mp3.com, and there are a few shows coming up in the Ames area.

On March 9 all of the artists, along with others, will be at a CD release performance at the Botanical Center in Des Moines for Ace’s local hip-hop compilation, “DMI Sho-Shot.”
